Play It Backwards — 1966 Tape Experiment Rock Tee

In 1966, during the recording of a song about meditation and the Tibetan Book of the Dead, the band did something no pop band had ever done before: they played five reel-to-reel tape machines simultaneously, three running forward and two running backward, and mixed all of them into a single song.

The result was the first major rock song in history to use what engineers called musique concrète — a technique borrowed from experimental classical music. To casual listeners, the song sounded like a trance. To fans who knew what was happening in the studio, it sounded like the future of recording being invented in real time.

Play it backwards. Three words that rewrote the rules of the studio.

About this design: Vintage technical illustration.
