The last track on the album that ended the old rock and invented the new one began with a quiet voice and an acoustic guitar and the simple phrase “I read the news today, oh boy.”
What followed was four minutes of one of the most devastating songs ever recorded — a meditation on distance, death, and the strange experience of being alive in a world where terrible things are constantly happening somewhere else. The song ended with a massive orchestral crescendo and a single piano chord that took 53 seconds to fade to silence. That silence is still considered the moment when rock music grew up.
About this design: Editorial illustration with an origami metaphor.
