The Studio Became the Instrument — London 1967 Rock Tee

In 1966, something happened that changed music forever. A rock band walked into a London recording studio and realized they didn’t have to be a rock band anymore. They could be orchestras. Or tape loops. Or string quartets. Or anything else they could imagine.

They stopped thinking of the studio as a room where you recorded music. They started thinking of it as an instrument you played. They ran microphones through speakers. They played tapes backwards. They recorded a 41-piece orchestra and mixed it with a sitar. They spent months on single songs that earlier bands would have recorded in an afternoon.

The studio became the instrument. And everything we call “modern music production” was born in that one building over those three years.
