They Were Wrong — 1962 Rejected Underdog Rock Tee

On January 1, 1962, four lads from Liverpool drove through a snowstorm to London to audition for one of the biggest record labels in the world. They played fifteen songs. They waited weeks for an answer.

The letter that came back allegedly contained one of the most infamous misjudgments in music history: “Guitar groups are on the way out.”

The executive who said it went on to become a footnote. The band he rejected went on to sell 600 million records and rewrite the definition of pop music.

Every dreamer has a rejection letter. Every legend has a moment when someone who was supposed to know better told them to give up.

About this design: Three words dominate the entire shirt: “THEY WERE WRONG” — rendered in heavy condensed serif, the way a headline should be. A thin red rule separates the statement from a small typewriter footnote that explains the reference for those who need it. At the bottom corner, a small red rubber stamp: 1962.
