2023: Forty-five years later, the three surviving members of his former band — with the help of Peter Jackson’s AI team — finish the song he started. Using technology that didn’t exist when it was recorded, they separate his voice from the piano on the old cassette and give him one last performance with his friends. They call it Now and Then. It debuts at #1 in the UK on November 2, 2023. Fans around the world listen to it with tears running down their faces.

Forty-five years connects 1978 to 2023. It’s the longest gap between the start and finish of a single song in the history of popular music. It’s also proof that some music refuses to end.
