In 1970, the quiet one released his first solo album. It was a triple album — three records in one box — full of songs that his old bandmates had refused to record because they thought they weren’t good enough. Critics called it one of the greatest solo debuts in rock history. It still is.

The title track was a Buddhist meditation on impermanence, borrowed from the Dhammapada: all things must pass. Leaves fall. Seasons end. Bands break up. People die. But — and this is the part the quiet one understood better than anyone — some things echo forever.

A good song is one of them.

About this design: Four seasons botanical tree illustration. A single majestic oak tree shown simultaneously in all four seasons — left quarter spring blossoms in pale pink, next quarter full summer green foliage, next autumn gold and amber leaves, rightmost quarter bare winter branches against grey sky. Leaves falling from the autumn section transform into small musical notes drifting downward. Deep wise roots visible below the ground. Detailed Victorian botanical engraving style.
