In the spring of 1969, the lead guitarist walked out of a business meeting at the band’s office — one of many arguments about money and lawsuits and contracts that were slowly tearing the band apart — and drove to his friend Eric Clapton’s house in the Surrey countryside. It was the first warm morning after a long dark winter. He picked up a guitar in Clapton’s garden and wrote a song in about an hour.

That song has since been streamed 1.65 billion times — more than any other song the band ever recorded. It’s been played at sunrises, at weddings, at births, at funerals, and at hospital bedsides all over the world for fifty-five years. A simple song about the sun coming up after the longest winter anyone could remember.

And the man who wrote it said, very quietly: it’s alright.
